Etching Glass with the Silhouette

I have to share one of the many projects that I've been making with my new Silhouette!

Have you ever etched glass? I can't believe how easy it is to do!!

Take a look at what I did to my trifle bowl!......Would this not make a cute wedding or birthday gift? Think of all the possibilities!
etched glass bowl

By adding {enjoy} to it makes this the perfect bowl for any dessert, like Angle Food Patriotic Delight or Chocolate Oreo Peanut Butter Dessert.

Etched Glass Bowl
I have to say though........a glass bowl is SO hard to photograph!......I must have taken 25+ pictures before I realized it showed up the best in front of the window. Still not the BEST shot....does any one know how to shoot something like this?

Want to see how I made it?!

Etching Glass collage

  1. Use your spiffy Silhouette Craft Cutter to cut what you want etched on the glass on adhesive vinyl.
  2. remove the letters from the vinyl and place a piece of adhesive paper to the front of your vinyl stencil and rub firmly (I used my Pampered Chef scraper)
  3. turn your vinyl over and remove the backing from the vinyl (leaving vinyl attached to the adhesive paper)
  4. place the vinyl on your bowl
  5. rub the adhesive paper firmly, allowing the vinyl to attach to the bowl. Be sure to rub out any bubbles or creases.
  6. removed adhesive backing
  7. apply a thick layer of etching cream with a sponge according to package instructions (I purchased etching cream at Hobby Lobby, my Michaels quit carrying it)
  8. Leave the etching cream sit for about 15 mins.
  9. Rinse off cream really well and remove vinyl! This makes the etching permanent, so you can not rub or wash it off. Wash bowl with soap and water, dry and it's ready to use!
So easy right?!

You could do this for a wedding or shower gift using a trifle bowl or even a Pyrex dish, just etch the couple's new last name! Add some hot pads and your favorite recipe and you have the perfect unique gift!

I will share a few more easy Silhouette project tutorials in the next few days!

Just think........if YOU win the free Silhouette, or purchase one using the special code from the post here.............you can join me in all the fun! .......And thanks again to the great people at Silhouette!

I'm Lovin' It! - Trash to Treasure

Welcome to the Party!!
*****************

http://iammommy.typepad.com/.a/6a00e551040fb788340133ecf1673a970b-150wi While my daughter's and I are heading to The Windy City, one of my favorite bloggers has accepted my invitation to host I'm Lovin' It this week!!! Amanda is a creative mom who blogs about her life as a Christian mom and wife at i am mommy and does amazing things with food and her camera at i am baker. Amanda is one of those super funny people, who is every bit as sweet as she is funny.

So today while I'm Lovin' Chicago, and Amanda being here.......Amanda is going to share what SHE is Lovin'...........Enjoy!!........I think I see a cupcake with MY name on it down there......

http://iammommy.typepad.com/i_am_baker/Debi/blog_button.png http://iammommy.typepad.com/my_weblog/images/blog_button/i_am_mommy_tab.png

I am so, so, so honored to be able to hang out at Tidymom's blog today! Hers is much cleaner then mine, and I have a feeling her kitchen always smells good... fresh cupcakes and fruit roll ups and Gooey Upside Down German Chocolate Cake? Um, yes please!

But anyway... since it is Friday and all, I thought I would share with you somethin' that I love. Ya know, for I'm Lovin' It Friday!

One thing that I love is finding a 'trash' and making it a 'treasure'.

I have a little baking blog and I really struggled to find ways to photograph cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. Cake stands are gorgeous, but can be so expensive! So one day at the thrift store, I spotted a candle stick for less then a $1 and an idea hit me. I would make my own!

I have made about 20 so far, and every single one is white! So I needed something new.

I picked up these little diddies at my local thrift store.

IMG_9483.stamp

They are ok on their own, but not as pretty as I would like, and certainly not functional. Although I am drawn to all things shiny, these just dont work when trying to photograph a scrumptious dessert. Who wants to see me and my camera in the reflection?

I decided to spray paint these black. I normally choose satin, but I was drawn to the semi-gloss this time.

IMG_9500.stamp

Since it has been so hot, it took all of 15 minutes to complete.

Wanna see how everything turned out???

(insert dramatic drum roll here please. What? I cant do that? Can someone please figure out a html code for dramatic drum roll and email it to me? Thanks.)

IMG_9796.stamp

I painted this base white. Its perfect for those extra special cupcakes!

IMG_9825.stamp

The black plate turned out beautifully if I dont say so myself.

IMG_9828.stamp

And I love my little cupcake stand! (and apparently I heart Tidymom too!) :)

IMG_9821.stamp

But my favorite it using the plate and cupcake stand as a cake pedestal!

Now.

I want you to know, since this is just spray paint, I wouldn't actually serve food off of them. These are more for decorative purposes, or for props. You certainly could use them for serving! You just purchase a special paint at home improvement and craft stores that seals the paint and is safe for eating off of.

So there you have it! Something that I'm Lovin'!

Thanks you SO much Cheryl for having me over... next time lets sample some of your refreshing Strawberry Lemonade drinks... its hot out there! :)

Thanks again Amanda the cupcake was D.E.L.C.I.O.U.S!! LOL......and after this post I can't WAIT to hit the resale shops with a new eye when I get back!

Fabric Covered Switch-plate Tutorial

You may remember last week I showed you how I made some easy fabric covered wall art for my bathroom.

After I hung them, I decided to make the switch-plate match!

Fabric Covered Switchplate

It's super easy, but I took a few pictures along the way to show you!

Fabric Covered Switchplate

Supplies:
  • Switchplate cover
  • Small piece of fabric
  • Plastic or something to cover your work surface
  • Mod Podge
  • Sponge brush for Mod Podge
  • X-acto knife
  • Scissors

Fabric Covered Switchplate tutorial 1-4

1. Start with your average outdated switchplate cover.
2. Cut fabric that you ♥ just a little bigger than your switchplate.
3. Cover the switchplate with Mod Podge.
4. Lay your piece of fabric on top of the Mod Podge, and press down all surfaces. Be sure to smooth out any creases or bubbles.

Fabric Covered Switchplate tutorial 5-8

5. After the fabric and Mod Podge sit and dry a bit, trim the excess fabric around the edge of the switchplate.
6. Use an X-acto knife to cut out the slots where your switch thingies will go(I left one side attached- see next step)! - you can also use the X-acto knife to punch a whole where the screw holes are.

7. Flip switchplate over and use a little Mod Podge to glue down the pieces you cut for the opening.

8. Turn the switchplate back over and cover with 2 coats of Mod Podge.

Hang your beautiful new switchplate!

OK.........Now back to our regularly scheduled posting.........

******************

Can you believe I finally have a project for you today?

I recently changed the colors in our bathroom. I bought a new shower curtain, hooks, towels, rugs, but that left me with a problem......the walls.

I needed something for over the towel bar.

This idea first hit me when Becca did it. I did mine a little different, since I was only needing small wall art, I simply bought a two pack of Artist Canvas at Hobby Lobby for $4. But if you want a large piece, I would recommend the way Becca made hers.

Fabric Wall Art

I love how they turned out! They were super easy.....and cheap!

What you will need:

  • Artist Canvas in the size you prefer (I used 2- 11"x14")
  • Fabric that you ♥ (I got 1/2 yard of 2 coordinating fabrics- which was more than enough fabric, but I want to do a few other things with the fabric)
  • Staple gun
  • Picturing-hanging wire and screw set
Let's get started........

Fabric Wall Art {1-4}

With any size canvas and your choice of fabric, lay the right side of the canvas on the wrong side of the fabric. Measure your fabric and cut to size.

Fabric Wall Art {5-8}

You will want to be sure to iron your fabric, or you will see creases in your finished piece.
Pull fabric tight and staple several times along two opposite edges. On the ends fold the corners as you would a present, pull up tight and staple.

To hang:
Attach the small screws and picture wire to the back of the frame. (I forgot to buy these, so I have not attached the wire to the back of mine yet)

Step back and admire!

This is an inexpensive way to decorate a wall, and when I get tired of this fabric, I’ll rip it off and start over.
The possibilities are endless, and there are so many amazing fabrics available! This was fun, easy and quick.....I can't wait to make a large one for another room!

Wouldn't something like this be amazing?!

{Cheap} Wall Art

Framed "S"

I'm still working on the walls in my office.

Several months ago I bought a few paper mache 12" letters at Joann Fabrics for $3.99

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them, until the other day.

I spray painted my letter "S" black.

Found this great wood frame at the resale shop for $8.

I stapled some burlap to the back
and hung the frame on the wall over my husband's desk.
I then stuck a nail in the wall right thru the burlap
and hung the letter "S" in the middle!

Perfect for now!!
My husbands first name and our last name both start with the letter "S"

I originally bought the frame with the intention of using it as a prop for photo shoots,
but for now I like it hanging here!
I think I even like the frame left gold........but I may swipe a little white over it some time.

What do you think? Gold? or White?

I'm linking this project post up at the following blog parties:Metamorphosis Monday, Make it for Monday, Make it Mondays, Making the World Cuter, Just Something I whipped Up, Motivate Me Monday, Make Your Monday, DIY Day, Today's Creative Blog, Talented Tuesday, Trash to Treasure Tuesday Make it Your's Day It's a Blog Party

Wreath Face Lift

I recently took my Christmas wreath off my front door. My door was empty, and I didn't know what I wanted to put up there.

Kimba then did a post on Winter Wreaths here. She listed links to some great ideas....but I fell in love with the gorgeous winter wreath @ StoneGable. So I set out to make my Winter Wreath......

After a few trips to Michaels, I couldn't find any silver leaves like she used, and then it occurred to me - spray painting my wreath white, wouldn't really show up on my WHITE front door any way.

It may have turned out a little bit springy......but hey, better to be AHEAD of the season instead of behind!

I started out with this wreath I've had for years and was becoming rather tired of.
1. Remove the metal star and homespun fabric
2. For $3 each I purchased 4 stems at Michaels, 2 of the white plastic "paper coin" branches (like StoneGable used) and 2 yellow/green flower stems
3. Break the stems down, pull/cut the flowers/coins off the stem so you have little individual bunches.
4. Randomly hot glue all around the wreath.

I know it's not rocket science................
and it's nothing "out of this world"
but it's a lot better than the poinsettia wreath I had on the door!
